My Brother’s Keeper: Becoming a Man

Program Mission

“To encourage and facilitate economic empowerment for families residing in Detroit by providing comprehensive life management, education/career development, and social/emotional support services to heads of households that have been impacted by specific environmental and societal conditions.”

What is “My Brother’s Keeper: Becoming a Man”?

My Brother’s Keeper is a 6-month mentorship and professional development program for Detroit area males from 13-18 years of age. This program focuses on developing a young man as he transitions from maleness to manhood. Sessions include instruction on setting goals, high expectations, anger management, peaceful conflict resolution, time management techniques, building self-esteem, respect for elders and women, motivational speakers and cultural field trips. They will be exposed to a suite of available services to assist in their academic, professional and personal growth. We seek to instill wisdom and life skills so as to enrich, transform and make a difference in the participants’ lives. The success of young men is vital to the revitalization of Detroit. The goal is to enhance the participant’s knowledge and ability to be competitive in the global job market. The program is based upon the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
